What We Do

Our Vision
  • Expand to become an organization that brings hope and happiness to a greater number of impoverished children by widening our net across the country and around the world

Our Mission

  • To bring hope and happiness to impoverished, repressed and disadvantaged children by enriching their lives and enhancing their chance of becoming independent, healthy and productive citizens of their country, and of the world
  • To evolve as an organization that provides underprivileged children with the tools they need to support and empower them in their pursuit of educational, cultural and recreational enrichment in order to ensure a brighter future for them

Our Goals

  • To emphasize communities in developing strategies to meet the needs of poor, repressed and disadvantaged children
  • To identify underprivileged children in targeted neighborhoods who desire bicycles, but whose desires are not being met
  • To donate bicycles each Christmas to children whose families cannot afford to purchase them
  • To award scholarships to our deserving young bicycle recipients, as well as other children in need
  • To come to the aid of children in families that have been displaced by natural disasters
  • To enlist financial support and human resources to help ensure that our humanitarian goals -- bicycles, scholarships, relief aid -- are met

How We Do What We Do

Gloria and Eddie Hill have supported a variety of humanitarian causes for many years. During the 2003 Christmas season, prior to establishing The G&E Hill Foundation, the Hills donated 25,000 thousand games, toys and bicycles to impoverished children in the Baltimore Area -- a small number compared to the need. There are 175,000+ children living below the poverty level in the city of Baltimore alone. To find these children, demographic data is enlisted, mostly from government statistics which show the relative income levels in different parts of the Greater Baltimore Area. Input from teachers, community and church leaders in the targeted neighborhoods is also of great assistance.

Once the children in need have been identified, bicycles are delivered on a specified date to a designated location convenient to their homes. Working with community and church leaders has proven to be most valuable in this approach. In a few instances, the delivery truck will show up, unannounced, in a targeted neighborhood with bikes and begin distributing them to the children who live there.

Gloria says:
Working with churches, communities, schools and other organizations, we are able to identify less fortunate children who want a bike of their own, but whose families cannot afford to purchase one for them. And we see to it that they get a new bicycle. During the holiday season, we enjoy personally delivering the bicycles to as many of these children as we can and seeing their faces light up upon receiving one of the most coveted gifts for a child.

The United States Marine Toys for Tots Foundation has become a wonderful partner in the Hill's mission. When shortly before Christmas 2004 a family crisis caused them a temporary setback, the U.S Marines stepped in and made available their trucks to deliver hundreds of bicycles and helmets to underprivileged children in Baltimore City. Many more bicycles were delivered to children who had requested bicycles through the United States Postmaster's "Dear Santa" Program. (See Gallery

In 2005, the annual Bicycle Giveaway was suspended in order to seed a special emergency fund set up to provide support to families displaced by Hurricane Katrina -- those who had been taken in by individual families that opened their homes to them during the recovery effort. It was shortly after the Katrina disaster hit that the Hills felt the urgent need to do something to help these unfortunate victims. Working with churches and states neighboring the affected areas, the organization was able to identify and provide financial aid to many displaced families in need of assistance (for more on this, and to read some of the heart-wrenching stories of the hurricane survivors who were helped by the G&E Hill relief effort, click on Relief Fund). Providing emergency relief assistance to disaster survivors has become a significant part of the G&E Hill Foundation's ongoing mission.

Gloria says:
From the outset, the G&E Hill Foundation has been there for children and families in need. We were there when millions, consumed by the daily news of the tragic Katrina, Rita, Ike and Haiti disasters rushed in to help the survivors. We were there when the news died down, when interest waned and many charitable organizations and individual donors went away, along with their much-needed financial aid. But we are still there. And we plan to continue being there for those still in need. Our efforts will be ongoing. Our aid will not dry up. We will not disappear. We will not forget!

Why We Do What We Do

The one thing that Gloria longed for as a child, but never got was a bicycle of her own. She vowed that one day she would provide a brand new bicycle for as many underprivileged children as she could who long for that first bicycle. A bicycle not only provides these children essential recreational mobility, something she missed out on, but it offers them hope. And with hope, a child is able to make wiser choices in life.

When the idea for the annual Bicycle Giveaway was born, the plan had always been to do even more. A scholarship awards program was a very important goal. In 2006, the G&E Hill Foundation committed to providing college scholarships to deserving youth (former bicycle recipients), who otherwise could not afford a college education. Had it not been for receiving scholarships, Gloria would not have been able to go to college.

Gloria says:
Although I was a poor, underprivileged child who did not get a bike, fortunately I excelled in school and received college scholarships. This changed my life. That is why I feel so passionate about education. It is truly the key to changing young lives for the better. Receiving a college education provided me with the necessary tools to achieve upward mobility. It is why I am where I am today.

The Hills, who are passionate about visual health, praise the efforts of organizations such as Gleams in the ongoing quest to find a cure for glaucoma, a potentially blinding eye disease that has claimed many of Gloria's family members on her mother's side (See Glaucoma).

They are equally committed to providing relief aid to children (and their families) that have become victims of natural disasters (See Relief Fund).
